BIOGRAPHY

Since the 2007 release of Things That Summer Brings, Derrek Wayne has performed on some of the finest stages in Portland, including The Towne Lounge, ScratchPDX, Jimmy Mac’s and Skidmore Bluffs. Derrek invites his audiences into the story of his songs and leads them in waltz time sing-alongs. Derrek continues to work on his sophomore album.

In July of 2008, The Derrek Wayne Trio recorded a live music video with The Penny Jam.

Jazz and Barbershop Quartet harmony are the basis of Derrek’s style and technique. Derrek’s songwriting influences include Johnny Mercer, Freddie Mercury, Paul Simon, Harry Nilsson, Vince Guaraldi, Jack White and Nellie McKay.

To those who listen to pop jazz, Derrek’s sound likely conjures a comparison to Jamie Cullum. Take Derrek’s first album for a spin, and you will hear Derrek drawing on old school pop influences such as Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Billie Joel, Emitt Rhodes and The Zombies’ Colin Blunstone. Derrek’s favorite performer of all time is Sammy Davis jr. His favorite Portland performer is Saw Whet.
